Иконостас Пикколомини {6564}
Piccolomini altarpiece
история:
In 1481, Andrea Bregno had started an altar for the tomb of Cardinal Francesco Todeschini-Piccolomini, who was to succeed Pope Alexander VI as Pius III in 1503 only to die within the year, leaving the Holy See to Julius II. After the building itself was completed in 1485, Michelangelo was commissioned to design four statues, whose execution he shared with Baccio da Montelupo (1469-1535). Perhaps Michelangelo's Bruges Madonna was once intended for Siena, where the Piccolomini altar is decorated today with an older statue from the group around Jacopo della Quercia.
