- Согласно "Житию Сергия Радонежского", написанного Епифанием, когда Сергий служил литургию с братом своим Стефаном и племянником Феодором, стоявшие в церкви ученики преподобного Исаакий Молчальник и Макарий увидели четвёртого (сослужащего с Сергием) мужа, одетого в светлую, блистающую одежду.
Они поняли, что видели ангела, и Сергий подтвердил это: "его же видеста аггел господень есть и не токмо ныне днесь, но и всегда посещением Божиим служащу ми недостойному с ним".
- Эта особая связь преп. Сергия с архангелом Михаилом отражена в данной иконе.

- The salient feature of this iconographic type is the Virgin's extended hand with straightened fingers that seems to transfer grace to the founder or donor.
Customarily portrayed in this iconographic schema are founders of monasteries or churches consecrated to the Virgin.
Here St Sergy of Radonezh is represented as the founder of a monastery, however not the Trinity monastery, the most famous associated with his name.
Due to quarrels at the Trinity monastery Sergy was obliged to depart for the Makhrishchi monastery in the vicinity.
Heeding the advice of his Father Superior, Stephen of Makhrishchi, Sergy took himself to a desolate spot on the Kirzhach River where having obtained the blessing of metropolitan Alexius founded the monastery of the Annunciation.
The representation of the archangel Gabriel in a posture of adoration before the Virgin indicates that the monastery was dedicated to the Annunciation.
