- The pelican is symbolic of Jesus' atoning work on the cross for us (atoning meaning that Jesus' death and resurrection made us free from the penalty of our sins). An ancient tradition said that the pelican, in times of famine, rips open it's own breast and feeds it's young with her blood. The pelican dies so that her young may live. In the same way, Jesus died so that we also may live.
