- This painting was inspired by a drawing from Raphael's studio which Catena must have seen.
- Another version of this painting, also by Catena, is larger and shows the figures of Joseph, Virgin, the infant Jesus, and Anna (Maria's mother) in full length as well as the full infant walker that Joseph has made for Jesus and is presenting to him in the painting.
- With the aid of the walker the infant Jesus will take both his first physical and spiritual steps on the road to fulfill his destiny.
