- Made of stone instead of the more usual wood, and with most of its original paint intact, this sculpture is extremely unusual.
- It was probably made to be used in one of the religious dramas performed throughout the Christian year.
- Moreover, while many twelfth-century sculptures of the Madonna are frontal and austere, this one, with its tenderly entwined figures, invites viewing from different angles.
- The striking depiction of Virgin holding a Son Who is more man than baby powerfully foreshadows Jesus’s death and increases the emotional intensity of this extraordinary work.
