Altarpiece is Masaccios only surviving documented work.

This altarpiece was commissioned by a Pisan notary, Ser Giuliano degli Scarsi, in 1426 for the family funerary chapel.

On February 19th 1426 Masaccio agreed to paint an altarpiece for the sum of 80 florins.

On December 26th of that year the work must have been already completed since payment for it is recorded on this date.

The altarpiece was probably broken up in the 16th century when the church was remodelled.

The surviving panels have been identified from a description of the altarpiece in Giorgio Vasaris Lives of the Painters (1568), the primary source of knowledge about early Tuscan artists such as Masaccio.

Vasari gave a detailed description of the work which was the basis for art critics for the attempt at reconstruction and for the recovery and identification of the work which was dismantled and dispersed in the 18th century.

Only eleven pieces have so far come to light and they are not sufficient to enable a reliable reconstruction of the whole work.

The panels of the altarpiece are in various museums.

This exhibition celebrates the 600th anniversary of the birth of Masaccio by reuniting the main panel with surviving fragments.

Богородица в рост на троне с Младенцем на левой руке. Её фигура написана уверенными и чёткими мазками, что создаёт впечатление скульптурной объёмности. Её лицо спокойно и печально, отрешённый взгляд направлен в никуда. Богородица закутана в тёмно-синий плащ. Глубокие складки плаща позволяют художнику играть со светотенью, что тоже создаёт особенный зрительный эффект.

Золотистая фигурка Младенца резко выделяется на тёмном фоне. Левой рукой Младенец касается правой руки БР. Правая рука Младенца поднесена ко рту, Он ест чёрный виноград - символ Евхаристии (причастия).

Трон построен строго по законам перспективы Джотто.

Пред троном сидят два музицирующие ангела.

Из-за трона видно двух поющих ангелов.

Безупречно нарисованные ангелы (художник прекрасно знал анатомию человека), окружающие трон, придают картине дополнительное эмоциональное звучание.

Декоративные элементы отходят на задний план. Трактовка образа, как и всегда у этого мастера, при видимой простоте обладает какой-то своей, только ему присущей индивидуальностью и внутренней духовной силой.

The figure of the Child seems almost three-dimensional, an effect emphasised by his elliptical halo. Light, coming from the left, unifies the whole composition, and there are carefully observed shadows.

The motif of the Child eating grapes refers to the blood shed on the cross and the wine of the Last Supper.

The gold background is almost obscured by the dominant throne, which is rendered in perspective, as are the two lutes played by angels at the Virgin's feet.

The paint surface is quite badly damaged. The altarpiece was originally more decorative: the Virgin's dress was a translucent red over silver leaf, which has now dulled.
