Death of the Virgin
- автор:
- Мантенья А.
- Andrea Mantegna
- история:
- This panel allows to go deeply into the art of Italian Renaissance belonging to the second half of the 15th century.
- It probably was a part of an altarpiece ordered by Ludovico Gonzaga to decorate the chapel of the Mantua family castle.
- It was subsequently sold to Charles I of England and later on it was purchased for Philip IV at the auction of the works of art held upon the former's execution.

- композиция:
- The scene is based on the Apocryphal Gospel, in particular the passage narrating the moment of the Virgin's passing away, surrounded by eleven of the Apostles; according to this source, St Thomas was preaching in remote countries and did not return in time.
- In a room framed by sombre pilasters, but looking out on to a view of the lake of Mantua, the Apostles gather round the dying Virgin.
- The skilfully constructed perspective is perfectly co-ordinated with the precisely drawn and coloured figures. The overall effect is severe, but its dignity is also vivid and moving.
- This is justly regarded as a masterpiece of the early Renaissance, with its detailed naturalism, radiant clarity and unshaken conviction.
- This classical architecture and the lake landscape that can be seen through the large window place the action in the Ducal Palace at Mantua rather than in Jerusalem where it really happened.
- Apostles, in different attitudes, hold symbols that they are paying their last homage to the Virgin: the palm, the All Souls Book, the censer and the candles.
- Mantegna's concern for perpective, as determined by Alberti, is reflected in the structure of the scene and in the skilful positioning of each figure within the composition space.
