Обручение св. Екатерины {2619} Mystical marriage of St Catherine
история:
The images suggest that the donor named in the description, Arigo di Neri Arighetti, commissioned the painting to celebrate the end of a feud.
This is one of the largest and most unusual 14th-century Sienese paintings, but the identity of the artist known as "Barna da Siena" remains a mystery.

композиция:
The legendary St Catherine of Alexandria had a vision in which Christ took her as His spiritual bride, placing a ring on her finger.
In this painting, the union symbolized by this event is echoed in the central scenes below: the Christ Child grouped with His Mother and grandmother, St Anne, and two enemies reconciled by an archangel.
The triumph of good over evil is represented in the lower scenes to right and left.
Many aspects of the painting seem to be unique in 14th-century Italian art, including the representation of St Catherine of Alexandria with the adult rather than the infant Christ and the topical scene of enemies discarding their weapons and embracing.
