Illuminated by artist responsible for Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ms. Auct. F.6.5 and Hereford Cathedral Library, Ms. 0.5.XI. French prayer on pastedown.

Long thought to have been made for Shaftesbury Abbey, Dorset, but recently argued to have been made for Queen Adeliza of Louvain, widow of Henry I, from a Shaftesbury model (Kauffmann, 2001).

Opening showing Christ in Majesty and a Tree of Jesse

On the left, Christ sits in majesty on a rainbow, in a mandorla set inside a rectangle; the evangelist symbols are in the four corners.

In the margin below the frame, painted against the bare parchment, an abbess kneels in supplication.

Jesse lies recumbent, a tree springing from his hip: King David, the Virgin and Christ are depicted in its branches, and Moses and Abraham stand on either side.
