The presence of SS Augustine and Nicholas of Tolentino, wearing black, leather-belted Augustinian habits, shows that this altarpiece was executed for an Augustinian church, probably for an altar dedicated to St Nicholas of Tolentino, who was canonized in 1446.
Though dating from 1454, the altarpiece is painted in an archaizing style indicative of Giovanni di Paolo's preference for the work of his great fourteenth-century forebears.
