A tenderness variant associated with the victory of the Great Prince Dmitry “Donskoy” over the Tatars at the Battle of Kulikovo on September 8, 1380.
It is said to have been brought to Dmitry by the Don Cossacks to aid him in battle.
After Dmitry’s victory he took it to Moscow. There, it was used again to repel an invasion of Tatars in 1591.
In gratitude to the Mother of God, on the place of victory, a monastery was established and named the Don monastery.
According to established tradition, the Most Holy Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, prepares and sanctifies Holy Chrism in the Don Monastery.
The Holy Chrism is distributed to all priests of the Russia Orthodox Faith.
