Seghers was elected to the artist's guild in 1611 and three years later he entered the Jesuit Order.
Jesuit doctrine would not allow him to sell and profit from his paintings, so Segher's works were often given as gifts to important monastery visitors.
Segher's painting style required collaboration, because Seghers painted only the floral swags and frames that embellished devotional scenes, not the devotional scenes themselves.
It is believed that he worked on the paintings first, because several canvases have been discovered with flowers and cartouches finished but without the central image.
