It is known that Louis IX built up a library of manuscripts and himself commissioned a number of works. The names of his illuminators are not known. However, the name of one of his grandson's artists was Master Honore and he worked for the court of Philip the Fair (1285-1314). Little is known about his career. "He lived in Paris on the south bank; a small group of manuscripts can be attributed to him. From them it is clear that by his time the style of Louis IX's painters had been significantly altered."

Master Honore's illumination is still extremely graceful and elegant, but architectural motifs play a far smaller part in the decoration. Faces and hands are extremely pallid and almost completely without colour, even more emphasis being laid on the drawing. By contrast, the drapery is fuller and the folds heavier. This is accomplished by a development in the modelling technique, for there is far more suggestion of light and shadow. This development may represent the first impingement of Italian Gothic painting on the north.

German painter. His major surviving work is the altarpiece for the guild of merchants trading with England, showing Passion scenes and incidents from the life of St Thomas a Becket.

Francke was a leader of the northern German version of International Gothic.

He had close lonks with the west and Burgundy in particular. His influence was widely spread over north Germany and alaong the shores of the Baltic.

Flemish painter.

The name of this master is misleading for he is a Flemish artist of the Antwerp school, known after his masterpieces, the St Anne altarpiece for the Dominican church in Frankfurt.

A few years older than Quentin Massys, the Master of Frankfurt was after this artist the principal painter of Antwerp at the turn of the 16th century.

His birthdate was determined from a double portrait of the artist and his wife in the von Auspitz collection in Vienna.

The identity of the Master of Frankfurt remains undocumented. In his case the designation given him by modern scholars is misleading since it is now clear that he was not German but Netherlandish, probably working in Antwerp. Although we are not certain of his name we do have his fingerprints. He used his fingers to smudge the paint in the clouds, giving them extra texture. Another interesting aspect of his technique is his apparent use of a stencil to create the pattern in St Anne’s red cloak. Notice how the design is uninterrupted across the folds of cloth.

No written sources have been found so far on the life of the Master M S, the most important representative of Late Gothic painting in Hungary.

The only clue concerning his activity is the date 1506 and the signature M S on the sarcophagus of one of his paintings, The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, held in the Christian Museum of Esztergom.

There is even uncertainty concerning the identity of the church for which his closely associated paintings were made.

The most widely accepted view identifies it as the Church of Mary of Selmecbanya, since most of the paintings were found in the vicinity of this important mining town.

There are four Passion paintings in the possession of the Christian Museum; the painting "The Birth of Christ" is held in Hontszentantal, while Adoration of the magi is kept in the Museum of Lille in France.

According to the earlier attempts at reconstructing the master's work now at the National Gallery, the paintings were supposed to decorate the outer panels of a large triptych when closed; when opened, the triptych was assumed to reveal reliefs, since traces of such reliefs can be found on the obverse of the Passion scenes.

Recent studies by restorers cannot exclude the possibility that the scenes taken from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Passion scenes were in fact parts of two different triptychs.

Netherlandish painter

This Flemish master, whose name derives from a painting "Virgin among the Virgins" now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, had one of the three most active workshops in Holland at the end of the 15th century.

The artist certainly possessed an exceptional expressive talent, which is plainly revealed by the intense dramatic force of the scene represented, by the serpentine and tormented line with which the figures are delineated, by the agitated poses and by the agonizing figure of the tortured Christ.

Even the range of colours is emotionally charged, the reds, blacks and whites a deliberate clashing accompaniment to the awesome tragedy of Christ's death.
